Launching the Make It In America Campaign

Manufacturing Group | November 4, 2011

November 1, 2011 saw the official launch of the Make It In America campaign from NIST-MEP.

Manufacturing is the cornerstone of our economy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the manufacturing sector produces $1.6 trillion of value each year for our economy, or 11.2% of our GDP. The U.S. Bureau of Statistics reports that nearly 9% of the country’s workforce, or 12 million Americans, are directly employed in the manufacturing field. Our industry plays a vital role in the global economy as well. The United Nations – Statistics Division states that the U.S. is the world’s largest manufacturing economy, producing 21% of globally manufactured projects.

While manufacturing is critical to economic growth, our industry isn’t just about statistics. Manufacturing is an integral part of our history, culture and even our patriotism. Seeing a product with the label Made in the USA resonates with us; we take pride in our work.

In honor of our country’s manufacturers, NIST MEP is proud to officially launch the Make It In America Campaign. The purpose of this initiative is to:

  1. Highlight the importance of US manufacturing and showcase the contributions of manufacturers nationwide.
  2. Reaffirm our belief that our country’s manufacturers can succeed and grow through innovative ideas, attracting new customers, and employing the workforce of the future.

Every week, NIST MEP will select a U.S. manufacturer to be the Featured Manufacturer of the Week. The featured manufacturer will be highlighted on this blog as well on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Selected manufacturers will collectively be showcased on our Make It In America page on the NIST MEP website.

Our featured companies are “ordinary” in the sense that they represent small and mid-sized businesses in America. They are run by people you know in your community and quite often they provide jobs to your friends and family.  What’s extraordinary about these companies is that they have embraced a forward-thinking business approach. These organizations have worked with the MEP network to invest in innovation. The MEP centers have assisted our featured companies with improving their products and processes, finding new solutions to problems, utilizing technology, tapping into new markets and improving the skills of their workforces. For more than 20 years, the MEP program has helped manufacturers create jobs, increase profitability and become more globally competitive.

Make It In America is a message: our manufacturers can, and will, make it, and make it well, in the U.S. The American dream is alive and strong today – with a commitment to innovation and hard work, we can overcome our challenges and succeed in an ever-changing economy.
