Layers for Better Quality of Living – Possibilities and Opportunities through Additive Manufacturing
When newcomers and experts meet on May 14-15, 2013 at the Erfurt Rapid.Tech Congress Exhibition in order to learn about and discuss the newest results, trends and possibilities of Generative Manufacturing, there are likely to be numerous attendees taking part. The two-day Expert Forum in Medical Technology is designed to allow not only for a uniquely deep exchange of scientific ideas, but also for a close interlinking of expert lectures and exhibition presentations. The congress exhibition, taking place this year for the tenth time, expects around 60 exhibitors, more than 400 congress attendees, and in excess of 650 exhibition visitors.
Since 2004, Rapid.Tech has become a leading meeting place for the rapidly developing interdisciplinary technology – Additive Manufacturing (AM). “Generative Manufacturing has already partly established itself within medical technology. New possibilities present themselves, such as through the development of innovative biomaterials for the manufacture of implants. The trend is moving strongly in the direction of the operation theatre,” summarizes Ralf Schumacher, Manager of Additive Manufacturing in the medical laboratory at the North West Swiss University for Applied Sciences, who is responsible for the Expert Forum of Medical Technology, when talking about the development of AM in this sector.
PD Dr. med. Horatiu Rotaru, (University Clinic Cluj-Napoca; Romania) shows how enormous advances are made possible in face implants through Generative Manufacturing in his key note speech lecture “Face Implants – from classic metal and animal skulls to modern 3D tailor made individual implants.” The generative processing of organic materials stands as the center point of the lecture sessions in the first few days at the Medical Technology Forum at Rapid.Tech. Among other themes, “Generative Manufacture of an artificial blood vessel system: optimal design and fluid characterization” and “Generative Manufacture of biometric bone structure from ceramics” will be tackled. A lecture comparing SLM-Technology and biomechanic dynamic stress on conventional finished bone plate is also on the program. Equally interesting are the reports on the clinical applications of these medical technologies over three sessions within the two conference days. Other topics in focus include three-dimensional capture of anatomy, AM-Solutions und – equipment in health science, selective laser melting for the production of future properties and testing methods, developmental techniques and the development of patient specific, porous implants in orthopaedics. A further lecture concentrates on laser beam melted implants that can acoustically measure bone fixtures.
Rapid.Tech 2013 – All Aspects of Additive Manufacturing
Alongside the Expert Medical Technology Forum Rapid.Tech 2013 there are also, in regard to AM, the Aviation and Dental Technology forums, the user-based conference, the Designer Day and the forum of the Fraunhofer-Alliance for Generative Manufacture.
“Additive Manufacturing has left the arena of being purely a developmental tool behind it. Generative Manufacture will be used more often and in more industries as a manufacturing tool,” reports Professor Andreas Gebhardt, expert advisor of Rapid.Tech.
Accordingly, the congress exhibition focusses not only on the technological aspects of Additive Manufacturing. Themed at this year’s exhibition are also aspects such as reproducibility, monitoring, and safety of the build quality as well as legal issues.
FabCon 3.D: The Platform for Fabber, Maker and 3D-Printers
Parallel to the Rapid.Tech on May 14-15, 2013 the FabCon 3.D will also be premiering at the Erfurt exhibition center. The convention will provide the up-to-date hype about Fabbers, Makers, and 3D-Printers with an appropriate platform in the German language room. The visitors can expect, alongside a creative workshop and a lecture program a comprehensive exhibition, as well as an evening get-together. Around 25 exhibitors – from commercial 3D-Printer manufacturers to the operation of hacker spaces – will present the most recent trends and achievements in this billion-dollar market
